A PERSONAL NOTE
Before I became a bookkeeper, I was exactly where many new business owners are today.
When my kids were young, I ran a small concession stand one night a week. I kept cash in a Tupperware container, recorded sales on sticky notes, and stored them with my receipts. Every few months, I wrote everything into a notebook. My business and personal finances were mixed together, but I thought I was doing okay because I eventually had everything ready for tax time.
For 16 years, that was my bookkeeping system. I assumed I was making money because I sold each item for more than it cost, but I didn't know whether my expenses were increasing, my profits were growing, or if my decisions were helping the business.
Looking back, I see that I wasn’t managing my business, I was simply recording its history.
After becoming a bookkeeper, I learned that bookkeeping isn’t just about taxes. It’s about understanding where your money comes from, where it goes, and what it’s telling you. Today, I follow a simple routine, keep my finances separate, and know where my business stands. I can make decisions based on clear numbers instead of guesses.
That’s why I created The Simple Bookkeeping Starter Guide For Canadian Small Business Owners, the bookkkeeping blueprint I wish I’d had when I started. No confusing jargon or expensive software. Just a simple system that helps you understand your money, make better decisions, and build a stronger business.
